Valerie Thomerson became Mayor of Piedmont April 24th, 2011. Ms. Thomerson holds a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, TX (1982) and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Sul Ross State University (2000). Ms. Thomerson was inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha and the National Political Science Honor Society due to her graduate GPA of 4.0.
Ms. Thomerson has spent most of her adult life in public service having previously served in the capacity of an Abstracter with Perdue, Brandon, Fielder, Collins and Mott assisting in the collection of delinquent taxes for various Texas school districts, counties and municipalities. Ms. Thomerson served with the Lubbock-Crosby County Community Supervision and Corrections Department and then with the Midland Judicial District Community Supervision and Corrections Department for an accumulative period of six years. Ms. Thomerson was recognized as the Midland Judicial District Officer of the Year in 1995 for her superior work and dedication. Upon completion of the Masters Degree, Ms. Thomerson was employed by the City of Piedmont, OK as the Community Development Director from 2001 to 2003 and held the same position in 2004 for the City of Rosenberg, TX. Due to health issues, Ms. Thomerson resigned her post with Rosenberg TX and upon her return to Oklahoma City area, Ms. Thomerson began consulting (2005 to 2008) during which she was briefly employed with Devon Energy. Ms. Thomerson has consulted with private engineering firms, governing entities and non-profit organizations. Ms. Thomerson shares her knowledge of government administration and nonprofit management as an Adjunct Professor for Oklahoma State University-OKC and Mid America Christian University (MACU). Ms. Thomerson continues to work as an Adjunct Professor in the Masters in Leadership and Public Administration program at MACU.
Ms. Thomerson actively volunteers with Canadian County United Way, Renal Support Network, and an organization for kidney patients called, End Stage Renal Disease: Network 13. Ms. Thomerson is a contributing author for the Kidney Koncerns magazine, is often a guest speaker for both patient and professional audiences, and is currently Chairman of the Patient Advocacy Committee, a member of the Medical Review Board and sits on the Board of Directors. Ms. Thomerson was one of the founders for Canadian County CASA program in El Reno, Ok and the first Board President (2002). Ms. Thomerson has often stated that one of her greatest accomplishments is the continued viability of this worthwhile program.
